Preliminary notice: The Beast & The Beauty auditions

The Old Mill Theatre is delighted to announce it will be presenting the world premiere of a new play by The Sum of Us and Breaker Morant playwright David Stevens. Directed by Mark De Friest, auditions are being held on February 4, 6 and 7 for a season running from June 22 to July 15.

It’s based on the age-old story of Beauty and The Beast – but this time set in the late 1800s outback. The beast of the title is Tom who, as a baby survived a bushfire that killed his parents and devastated the family property.

Badly disfigured, Tom inherits the station and grows up there, isolated, but protected by the tightknit community. A succession of housekeepers over the years all eventually become unable to cope with his disfigurement.

When Belle arrives she is also initially repelled by Tom’s appearance but gradually comes to see the character of the man.

ROLES AVAILABLE

FEMALE: Belle, the storekeeper’s wife and the local prostitute.

MALE: Tom, Belle’s father, the storekeeper, the local priest, an Aboriginal stockman named Jack (who looks after Tom as a child and several station hands) and several minor roles.

To express an interest in auditioning, call the Old Mill Theatre on 9367 8719 or email oldmilltheatre@iinet.net.au with “B & B” in the subject line.
